Unfinished Business

Like a lot of people, I have problems finishing things that I start. Writing the ending of story. Finishing a drawing. Figuring out exactly when any project can be called done. Usually this means whenever a class project is due. I’ve found that finding the end is really hard. If you go too far, you’ve ruined something that could have been great. If you don’t go far enough, you’ve build up potential that goes nowhere. It’s frustrating and that’s one of the things I need to work on. Starting with my sketchbook. I’ve only ever finished on sketchbook in my life (not that I was actually trying… the ending just happened upon me when I didn’t have any more pages to draw on).

I will finish this sketchbook that I’m working on.
I will finish this sketchbook that I’m working on.
I will finish this sketchbook that I’m working on.
I will finish this sketchbook that I’m working on.
I will finish this sketchbook that I’m working on.
I will finish this sketchbook that I’m working on.
I will finish this sketchbook that I’m working on.

Furthermore,

I will finish pieces in this sketchbook.
I will finish pieces in this sketchbook.
I will finish pieces in this sketchbook.
I will finish pieces in this sketchbook.
I will finish pieces in this sketchbook.

It’s a struggle, really. I’m working on something right now that I am tirning out to really like, but I’m having a hard time deciding where to finish it.

Do I finish her tentacles and call it a day? Do I add a background? Do I color her? Do I turn her into digital art? I don’t know where the end is and it makes even finishing her tentacles a chore.

As you can see, I’m adding details to her tentacles and it’s repetitive, kind of tedious work. I think I have the motivation to finish this piece, but it is a common occurance to start something and not want to take the next step in fear of ruining it.

Finding that motivation can be hard though. I think the best way to cure your fear is to just do it. For me, that means making another copy of this lovely lady and then taking the next step. 😉

On a side note, I actually have a break coming up so I’ll probably try to make a finished product of this particular piece by this time next week. Come back to see me then if you’re interested in seeing her done!

Byyyye.
